 Abilene Professional Eyecare Associates announces
“Giving Back to the Big County” eye health initiative

Abilene, TX-  Professional Eyecare Associates is proud to announce it’s new eye health initiative beginning in the month of September. Beginning Sept 3rd, Professional Eyecare Associates will be providing one complimentary eye-health examination every day for the month. We are calling it “Giving Back to the Big Country”. We feel this community has given us so much so we in turn would like to give something back. We will be giving people the chance to nominate somebody they feel would benefit the most.

Here’s how it works:

1. Go on our Facebook page and ‘Like’ us on Facebook

2. Write a short 20-30 word essay on who you would like to nominate for a complimentary eye-health examination and why and email this to us at lruiz@abileneclearvision.com, please include the nominee’s contact information and their email address.

3. Some restrictions apply, one eye exam per family, also not available to people who already have eye insurance. Persons selected will also not be eligible for the same promotion the next year.

That’s it. We realize times are tough, and healthcare can be an expensive part of your budget. This is our way to try and ease some of that burden. We are committed to give away a complimentary eye-health examination every day in September to help the great people of our community.

Back to School

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Well, we felt a little of that crisp air last weekend, football fans are back packing the stadiums, I have actually seen some leaves change. Now I will admit, that last statement was when I was home in New Mexico, but I digress. All of this means that it is quickly approaching my favorite time of year, the Fall. I love the fall, mainly because of football, but also because it gets a little cooler. This is really great considering the unrelenting heat we had this summer. Fall also means that it is back to school time. Our kiddos love school and we want to give them the best advantage we can in the classroom. Did you know  that 80% of the learning process happens through our eyes.  To help with the cost of going back to school, we are currently running a back to school special. $40 off of a new pair of frames, I want your kids to have the best possible school year possible. So bring em in, let us make sure their eyes are great, and lets have a great year

Professional Eyecare Associate - Children's Art & Literacy FestivalA few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the Dr. Seuss festival in beautiful downtown Abilene, TX.It was put on by the wonderful people of the Children’s Art & Literacy Festival, or CALF for short.

Professional Eyecare Associates was also very happy to be a sponsor for this event. Our sponsorship of this fine event was definitely inspired by the efforts of one very special person. She is a 7 year old ball of energy and beauty named Sara Jane Shanks. My daughter is enamored with anything Dr. Suess related and I couldn’t be happier. I myself am an avid reader and I also have some favorite authors ( more on that at a later date), so I really try to encourage my children to read. SJ is crazy about Suess, Lorax, Cat in the Hat, Yertle the Turtle, Sam I AM, and we got pictures with all of them at the festival.

SO, thanks CALF, especially from a 7 year old little girl. My only advice, next time we have an outdoor festival in Abilene, let’s pick a month without so many 100 degree afternoons!!

Happy 4th of July from Professional Eyecare AssociatesHappy 4th of July folks.

Just a helpful reminder from your friendly eye doc to be very careful in your celebrations. Let me explain.

Now, I love fireworks just as much as the next guy. But let’s remember one basic thing, these things are basically smaller versions of bombs and firearms. Please do not shoot fireworks at or near another person, especially near their head. Now I have to admit, I used to have bottle rocket fights when I was younger and stupider. (some will probably think I am still the later).  I was lucky and never got injured.

Since I became an eye doc, I can think of at least a dozen eye injuries I have seen from fireworks, and at least 2 retinal detachments. You know what they say, Its always fun and games until someone puts an eye out!! Truer words have never been spoken. So lets be careful out there, and shoot those fireworks into the sky, and not into your cousin Jim Bobs noggin.  If you do suffer any injuries related to your fireworks experience, contact 911 immediately or contact our office for an eye evaluation.

Happy 4th!!

I am always very impressed with the level of community involvement here in the Big Country. I think the people of Abilene have such a giving and serving heart.

There are so many organizations here that a person can get involved with to help give a little back. We just moved back to Abilene last June so life has been a little hectic. My community involvement has been a little lacking this past year, but I plan to change that.

Now I just need to decide what and where I need to devote some of my time. Anybody who has any suggestions, please feel free to contact me at drmike@abileneclearvision.com, I’d love to hear from you.

Hello Abilene!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Hello, my name is Dr. Michael Shanks and I am the owner of Professional Eyecare Associates. I’ve never done a blog before so I thought I would try my hand at this. I want this blog to be informative, but also I think we can have a little fun with it.

I hope to give out some tips on your eyes, eyecare in general, and also talk about some community happenings around here in Abilene. Once football season starts, we may get into some lively pigskin topics too. Especially when I get really frustrated with my Cowboys. I hope ya’ll enjoy this and please excuse my grammar and spelling errors.
